Stephen Ferrando

Stephen Ferrando SDB (born September 28, 1895 in Rossiglione , Italy , † June 21, 1978 , Italy) was an Italian religious priest , missionary and Roman Catholic bishop of Shillong .

Life

Ferrando was ordained a priest on March 18, 1923 at the Salesian Institute of Borgo San Martino , Alessandria . A few months later, on December 2, 1923, he went on a mission to British India with nine other confreres . On December 23, 1923 he reached Shillong , the capital of Assam Province and seat of the Apostolic Prefecture of Assam . There he worked as a novice master and catechist . In 1929 he became director of Our Lady's House in Shillong.

During this time the Holy See entrusted the Salesians with the Archdiocese of Madras , the Diocese of Krishnagar and the Apostolic Prefecture of Assam. On July 9, 1934, Ferrando in Nadiab , the island city in the province of Bengal, was ordained bishop of Krishnanagar and took possession of the diocese on the same day. He chose Apostolus Christ as the bishopric. After the prefecture of Assam had been raised to the diocese of Shillong , Ferrando took it over on November 26, 1935 as the second bishop. He remained in this position until his retirement on June 26, 1968. Ferrando was appointed titular bishop of Troyna and retired to Italy.

Beatification process

A beatification process was opened for Ferrando. After the diocesan beginning, the Positio super vita et virtutibus was made on November 28, 2006 . After the files were handed over to the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints , Pope Francis awarded him the heroic degree of virtue on March 3, 2016 .
