The Ri-Bhoi district is a district in the Indian state of Meghalaya . The administrative seat is the city of Nongpoh .
geography
The district of Ri-Bhoi is located in the north of Meghalaya on the border with Assam . The area of the district is 2378 square kilometers. Neighboring districts are the East Khasi Hills and West Khasi Hills districts in the south. The district borders Assam to the north and east.
history
The district of Ri-Bhoi was created on June 4, 1992 in its present form from parts of the then East Khasi Hills district.
population
According to the 2011 census, the Ri-Bhoi district has 258,840 inhabitants. With 109 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is rather sparsely populated. Of the 258,840 residents, 233,587 people (90.24 percent) lived in rural communities and 25,253 people in urban areas.
The district District Ri-Bhoi is mostly populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). Among them (2011) were 230,081 people (88.89 percent of the district population). The Dalit ( scheduled castes ) numbered only 590 people in 2011 (0.23 percent of the district's population).
Population development
As everywhere in India, the population in the Ri-Bhoi district has been growing rapidly for decades. The 2001 Indian census found a population of 192,790 people. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was more than 34 percent (34.26%). In these ten years the population increased by more than 32,000 people. Significant places
In the district of Ri-Bhoi there are only two urban settlements (census towns) with the district capital Nongpoh and Umroi.
District population by gender
Of the 258,840 residents, 132,531 (51.20 percent) were male and 126,309 female. This is typical of India, where there is a marked increase in men.
District population by language
A large majority of the total population of the South Garo Hills District speaks Khasi. Khasi is number one in all three CD blocks. In the C: D. Block Umling, however, the khazi-speaking people are only a relative majority. More than 10,000 people each speak Garo, Kharbi / Mikir, and Nepali. Hindi is only spoken by a small minority of immigrants.

Population of the district by confession
Almost all of the local population has converted to Christianity in the past hundred years. However, several thousand people are still followers of the traditional religions. The Hindus are a significant minority and, like many Muslims, come from other areas of India. The following table shows the exact religious composition of the population:

education
The goal of full literacy has not yet been achieved. Of the 205,978 people aged seven and over, 155,859 (75.67 percent) can read and write. But there is a city / country ditch when it comes to literacy. While 76.79 percent of the male population can read and write, it is only 74.49 percent of the female population. Almost 88 percent of the male population in cities is literate. It is only less than 74 percent of rural women. The following table provides an overview of the relationships:
