The large stone grave Angelslo-Noord is a megalithic grave complex of the Neolithic western group of the funnel cup culture in Angelslo , a residential area of the municipality of Emmen in the Dutch province of Drenthe . It bears the Van Giffen number D46.

location

The grave is now in the middle of the Angelslo development area on a green area between the Fokkingeslag and the Hoitingeslag. There are several other large stone graves in the vicinity. 330 m south-southeast is the large stone grave Angelslo-Zuid (D47) and 2.1 km west-northwest is the large stone grave Emmerdennen (D47).

Research history

The existence of the grave was first mentioned on the Hottinger map drawn up between 1788 and 1792. In 1809 Johannes Hofstede carried out an excavation either here or at grave D47. In 1878 an investigation was carried out by William Collings Lukis and Henry Dryden . In 1918 Albert Egges van Giffen documented the facility for his atlas of the Dutch megalithic graves. Restorations took place in 1960 and 1997. Since 1983 the facility has been a national monument ( Rijksmonument ).

description

The complex is an east-west oriented passage grave . A stone enclosure could not be found. The burial chamber has a length of 9.5 m and a width of 3.6 m. It consists of five pairs of wall stones on the long sides and one end stone each on the narrow sides. Of the original five capstones, the middle one is missing. One of the capstones has a series of wedge holes. It is unclear whether the entrance to the chamber originally had gangways.
