education

The goal of full literacy is still a long way off. Of the 211,130 people aged seven and over, 133,272 (63.12 percent) can read and write. The higher literacy of women is astonishing by Indian standards. While 58.51 percent of the male population can read and write, it is 67.61 percent of the female population. In the (only) city of Jowai, more than 90 percent can read and write. The men and women are almost equally literate. The conditions in the rural communities are astonishing for India.
