The South West Garo Hills district is a district in the Indian state of Meghalaya . The administrative seat is in Ampati .

The South West Garo Hills district is located in the far west of Meghalaya on the border with Bangladesh . The area of ​​the district is 822 square kilometers. Neighboring district is the West Garo Hills District to the northeast, east, and southeast. In the north-west and north, the district borders on the Indian state of Assam . In the south, southwest and west the district borders on India's neighboring state Bangladesh.

history

The district was created on August 7, 2012 when the then West Garo Hills district was divided. The CD blocks Betasing (all municipalities; 72,103 inhabitants) and Zikzak (all municipalities; 74,602 inhabitants), 11 municipalities of the CD block Dalu (with 2875 of the 54,095 inhabitants of the CD block), 25 municipalities of the CD block Gambegre (with 6777 of the 33,546 inhabitants of the CD block), the municipality of Angalgre of the CD block Rongram (with 153 of the 133,756 inhabitants of the CD block) and 41 municipalities of the CD block Selsella (with 15,985 of the 175,206 inhabitants of the CD block) formed the new South West Garo Hills district.

The district of South West Garo Hills district is mostly populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). Among them were (2011) 138,168 people (80.10 percent of the district population). The Dalit ( scheduled castes ) numbered only 2095 people in 2011 (1.21 percent of the district's population).

Of the 172,495 residents, 87,135 (50.51 percent) were male and 85,360 female. This is typical of India, where there is usually a marked increase in men.

Only about 59 percent of the district's residents are Garo. Around 20 percent of the population speak Bengali. The Hajong, who belong to Hinduism, make up around 11 percent, the Hindu cooks around 6 percent of the residents. In addition, there are smaller linguistic minorities who speak Assamese, Hindi and Rabha.

In the past 100 years, the majority of the local population has converted to Christianity. Today about 57 percent of the population are Christians. However, there are significant religious minorities due to the high level of immigration from other parts of India and from Bangladesh. Around 25 percent of the population are Hindus (including the Hajong and Koch) and around 15 percent Muslim.
