The East Jaintia Hills district is a district in the Indian state of Meghalaya . The administrative seat is the place Khliehriat .
geography
The East Jaintia Hills district is located in the far east of Meghalaya on the border with Bangladesh . The area of the district is 2126 square kilometers. The neighboring district is the West Jaintia Hills District to the north and west and the Indian state of Assam to the northeast, east and southeast. In the southwest the district borders on India's neighboring state Bangladesh.
history
The district was created on July 31, 2012 in its current form through the division of the former Jaintia Hills district into the two districts of East Jaintia Hills and West Jaintia Hills. The two CD blocks Khliehriat and Saipung formed the new East Jaintia Hills district.
population
According to the 2011 census, the East Jaintia Hills district has a population of 122,939. With 58 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is rather sparsely populated. All 122,939 residents lived in rural communities.
The East Jaintia Hills district is mostly populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). They included (2011) 118,158 people (96.11 percent of the district's population). The Dalit ( scheduled castes ) numbered only 473 people in 2011 (0.38 percent of the district's population).
Population development
As everywhere in India, the population in the East Jaintia Hills district has been growing rapidly for decades. The 2001 Indian census found a population of 92,792 people. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was more than 32 percent (32.49%). In these ten years the population increased by more than 32,000 people. District population by gender
Of the 122,939 residents, 61,233 (49.81 percent) were male and 61,706 female. The excess of women is atypical for India, where there is usually a significant increase in men.
District population by language
A clear majority of the total population of the East Jaintia Hills District speaks Pnar / Synteng, which is one of the Khasi languages. Two other Khasi languages follow in second and third place with Khasi and War. There are small minorities of foreign speakers. Hindi is only spoken by a very small minority of immigrants. In the Saipung CD block, the high number of 6,491 of 37,107 inhabitants (17.49 percent) is listed under Others.

Population of the district by confession
In the past 100 years, the majority of the local population has converted to Christianity. Nevertheless, an above-average number of people have remained true to their traditional religions. In both CD blocks, over 20 percent of the residents are followers of their traditional religion. The few Hindus and Muslims are mostly immigrants from other areas of India. education
The goal of full literacy is still a long way off. Of the 93,083 people aged seven and over, 54,255 (58.29 percent) can read and write. The higher literacy of women is astonishing by Indian standards. While 57.31 percent of the male population can read and write, it is 59.24 percent of the female population. administration
With Khliehriat and Saipung, the district has two Community Development Blocks (CD Blocks; subdistricts). On April 6, 2001, the previous CD block Khliehriat was divided into the two current CD blocks.
