The East Garo Hills district is a district in the Indian state of Meghalaya . The administrative seat is the city of Williamnagar .
geography
The East Garo Hills district is in the western half of Meghalaya. The area of the district is 1113 square kilometers. Neighboring districts are West Khasi Hills to the east, South Garo Hills to the southeast and south, West Garo Hills to the west, and North Garo Hills to the northwest and north.
history
The district was created on October 22, 1976 by dividing the Garo Hills district into the East Garo Hills and West Garo Hills districts. He downsized on July 27, 2012 when the then East Garo Hills district was divided. The CD blocks Kharkutta (all municipalities; 51,477 inhabitants) and Resubelpara (all municipalities; 104,514 inhabitants) and 66 municipalities of the CD block Songsak (with 16,128 of the 53,107 inhabitants of the CD block) separated from the former East Garo Hills district and formed the new one North Garo Hills District.

According to the 2011 census, the North Garo Hills district has a population of 145,798. With 98 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is rather sparsely populated. Of the 145,798 residents, 121,201 people (83.13 percent) lived in rural communities and 24,597 people in urban areas.
The district of North Garo Hills district is mostly populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). Among them (2011) were 138,479 people (94.98 percent of the district population). The Dalit ( scheduled castes ) numbered only 410 people in 2011 (0.28 percent of the district's population).

District population by gender
Of the 145,798 residents, 74,352 (51.00 percent) were male and 71,446 female. This is typical of India, where there is usually a marked increase in men.
District population by language
About 140,000 residents of the district are Garo. Around 2000 people speak Bengali. There are also smaller linguistic minorities who speak Assamese, Hindi and Nepali. These language groups, which together number around 2,400 people, are also predominantly Hindus.
Population of the district by confession
Almost the entire local population has converted to Christianity in the past 100 years. Today more than 93 percent of the population are Christians. There are also around 4400 Hindus and around 2100 Muslims (mostly Bengalis).
education
The goal of full literacy is still a long way off. Of the 117,508 people aged seven and over, 82,050 (69.83 percent) can read and write. For Indian standards, the clear difference between the sexes and the urban / rural ditch is normal. Almost 91 percent of men in the only city (Resubelpara) can read and write.
