Williamnagar is a city in the Indian state of Meghalaya . The city is based on a village called Simsanggre , which was later renamed Williamnagar after the first Chief Minister of Meghalaya Williamson A. Sangma .

The city is the capital of the East Garo Hills district . Williamnagar has municipal board status . The city is divided into 10 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census, it had 24,597 inhabitants, of whom 12,735 were men and 11,862 women. Christians make up the majority of the city's population with a share of over 84%. Hindus form a minority of around 10%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 88.9%, well above the national average. 84.6% of the population belong to the Scheduled Tribes .
