The South Garo Hills district is a district in the Indian state of Meghalaya . The administrative seat is the city of Baghmara .
geography
The South Garo Hills district is located in the southwest of Meghalaya on the border with Bangladesh . The area of the district is 1852 square kilometers. Neighboring districts are West Garo Hills to the west and northwest, East Garo Hills to the north, West Khasi Hills to the northeast and east, and South West Khasi Hills to the southeast. In the south, the district borders on India's neighboring state, Bangladesh.
history
The district was created on June 18, 1992 in its current form from parts of the then East Garo Hills district.
population
According to the 2011 census, the South Garo Hills district has 142,334 residents. With 77 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is rather sparsely populated. Of the 142,334 residents, 129,203 people (90.77 percent) lived in rural communities and 13,131 people in urban areas.
The district of South Garo Hills district is mostly populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). Among them were (2011) 134,237 people (94.31 percent of the district population). The Dalit ( scheduled castes ) numbered only 319 people in 2011 (0.22 percent of the district's population).
Population development
As everywhere in India, the population in the South Garo Hills district has been growing rapidly for decades. The 2001 Indian census found a population of 110,244 people. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was more than 29 percent (29.11%). In these ten years the population increased by more than 32,000 people. In the district of South Garo Hills there is only one urban settlement with the district capital Baghmara (13,131 inhabitants).
District population by gender
Of the 142,334 residents, 73,170 (51.41 percent) were male and 69,164 female. This is typical of India, where there is a marked increase in men.
District population by language
A large majority of the total population of the South Garo Hills District speaks Garo. There are small minorities of foreign speakers. But in none of the four CD blocks does a minority reach more than 4 percent of the population. Hindi is only spoken by a small minority of immigrants.

Population of the district by confession
Almost the entire local population has converted to Christianity in the past 100 years. The few Hindus and Muslims are mostly immigrants from other areas of India. The following table shows the exact religious composition of the population:

education
The goal of full literacy has not yet been achieved. Of the 114,425 people aged seven and over, 82,062 (71.72 percent) can read and write. But there are clear differences in literacy between the sexes and a city / country ditch. While 76.23 percent of the male population can read and write, it is only 66.9 percent of the female population. Almost 92 percent of the male population in cities is literate.
