Baghmara is a city in the Indian state of Meghalaya . It is located near the border with Bangladesh .
The city is the capital of the South Garo Hills district . Baghmara has the status of a Municipal Board . The city is divided into 13 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census it had 13,131 inhabitants, of which 6,700 were men and 6,431 were women. Christians make up the majority of the city's population with a share of over 84%. Hindus form a minority of around 14%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 89.8%, well above the national average. 85.1% of the population belong to the Scheduled Tribes . The majority of the population belongs to the Garo .
