The West Khasi Hills district is a district in the Indian state of Meghalaya . The administrative seat is the small town of Nongstoin .
geography
The West Khasi Hills district is located in the center of Meghalaya on the border with Assam . The area of the district is 3911 square kilometers. Neighboring districts are the districts of Ri-Bhoi in the north and northeast, East Khasi Hills in the east and southeast, South West Khasi Hills in the south, South Garo Hills in the southwest and west, and East Garo Hills in the west and northwest. In the north, the district borders on the Indian state of Assam.
history
The district was created on October 28, 1976 when the then Khasi Hills district was divided into East Khasi Hills and West Khasi Hills. A downsizing took place on August 3, 2012 when the then West Khasi Hills district was divided by the splitting off of the CD blocks Mawkyrwat (all municipalities; 54,462 inhabitants) and Ranikor (all municipalities; 41,218 inhabitants) and 18 municipalities of the CD block Nongstoin (with 3491 of the 81,840 inhabitants of the CD block). These formed the new South West Khasi Hills district.
population
According to the 2011 census, the West Khasi Hills district has a population of 284,290. With 73 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is rather sparsely populated. All residents lived in rural communities.
The district West Khasi Hills is mostly populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). Among them were (2011) 280,352 people (98.61 percent of the district population). The Dalit ( scheduled castes ) numbered only 53 people in 2011 (0.02 percent of the district's population).
Significant places
In the district of West Khasi Hills, there are two places with the district capital Nongstoin and Mairang, which belong to the places counted as urban settlements (census towns).

District population by gender
Of the 284,290 residents, 143,380 (50.43 percent) were male and 140,910 female. This is typical of India, where there is usually a marked increase in men.
District population by language
A majority of the total population of the West Khasi Hills District speaks various Khasi languages such as Khasi, War and Pnar / Synteng. The total number of speakers of Khasi languages is at least 160,000. Garo, which dominates the western part of Meghalaya, is also strongly represented (at least 30,000 people). It is difficult to make a precise statement, however, as more than 79,000 people are listed under the heading others in the entire district today. The 2001 census data show no strong presence of another language. What is striking, however, is the statistical decline in the khazi-speaking population from 185,000 people in 2001 to 161,000 people in 2011. This despite an increase in population. So the majority of the people listed under others should speak a Khasi language anyway.
Population of the district by confession
Almost the entire local population has converted to Christianity in the past 100 years. More than 96 percent of the total population are Christians. There are also over 5000 followers of traditional religions, mainly in the CD block Mairang. All other religions are only weakly represented.
education
The goal of full literacy is still a long way off. Of the 218,867 people aged seven and over, 172,579 (78.85 percent) can read and write. What is unusual for Indian standards is the small difference between the sexes in both urban communities and rural areas. As usual in India, the literacy rate in the district differs between rural communities and cities. The following table provides an overview of the relationships:
