Jowai is a city in the Indian state of Meghalaya .
The city is the capital of the West Jaintia Hills district . Jowai has the status of a Census Town . The city is divided into 13 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census it had 28,430 inhabitants, of whom 13,675 were men and 14,755 women. Christians make up the majority of the city's population with a share of over 63%. Hindus form a minority of around 5%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 91.1%, well above the national average. 91.3% of the population belong to the Scheduled Tribes .
