The diocese Tiruchirappalli ( lat. : Dioecesis Tiruchirapolitanus ) is in India situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Tiruchirappalli .
history
The diocese of Tiruchirappalli was established in 1606 as a mission sui juris Madurai from the cession of territory by the diocese of Cochin , but it was repealed in 1773.
The diocese Tiruchirappalli was again in 1836 by Pope Gregory XVI. from the cession of territory by the diocese of São Tomé of Meliapore as Mission sui juris Madurai . On May 19, 1846 the Mission sui juris Madurai was by Gregory XVI. raised to the apostolic vicariate . The Apostolic Vicariate Madurai was on September 1, 1886 by Pope Leo XIII. with the Apostolic Constitution Humanae salutis raised to the diocese.
On June 7, 1887, the diocese of Madurai was renamed the Diocese of Trichinopoly and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Bombay as a suffragan . The Diocese of Trichinopoly gave up on June 12, 1923 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Tuticorin . Another cession took place on January 8, 1938 to found the diocese of Madura . On October 21, 1950, the Diocese of Trichinopoly was renamed the Diocese of Tiruchirappalli . The diocese of Tiruchirappalli was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Madurai on September 19, 1953 as a suffragan. On November 10, 2003, the Diocese of Tiruchirappalli gave parts of its territory to the establishment of the Diocese of Dindigul .
