Thomas Fernando

Thomas Fernando (born May 9, 1913 in Idinthakarai , † July 4, 2006 in Tuticorin ) was an Indian Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Tuticorin .

Life

He came from a town in the Nellai district (southern India) and was the sixth of seven children. After school education in Trichy and the seminary in Tuticorin, he was sent to Rome by Bishop Francis Tiburtius Roche , where he was ordained a priest on March 18, 1939 . In 1942 he was awarded a doctorate in canon law in Rome and in 1944 a doctorate theologiae . After his return he worked as a prefect and as a teacher.

On June 25, 1950, he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Tuticorin and Titular Bishop of Abitinae . The episcopal ordination donated him on October 1st of the same year by the Bishop of Tuticorin Francis Tiburtius Roche ; Co- consecrators were James Mendonça , Bishop of Tiruchirappalli , and Joseph Mark Gopu , Auxiliary Bishop in Pondicherry . When Bishop Roche resigned on June 26, 1953, Thomas Fernando succeeded him as diocesan bishop. He participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council . On November 23, 1970 he was appointed Bishop of Tiruchirappalli.

On October 6, 1990, at the age of 77, Thomas Fernando's resignation was granted by Pope John Paul II .
