Francis Tiburtius Roche

Francis Tiburtius Roche SJ (born April 14, 1879 in Tuticorin ( India ); † December 17, 1955 ibid) was bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Tuticorin from 1923 to 1953 and thus the first native bishop of the Latin rite in the 20th century.

Life

Roche joined the Jesuit order and was ordained a priest on October 2, 1910 . Then he was pastor of the Church of the Redeemer in Tiruchirappalli until 1923 . In 1923 Pope Pius XI appointed him . as bishop of the newly established south Indian diocese of Tuticorin. The episcopal ordination took place on September 23, 1923 by the Bishop of Tiruchirappalli Ange-Auguste Faisandier SJ; Co- consecrators were Adalric Benziger OCD , Bishop of Quilon , and Marie-Auguste Chapuis MEP , Bishop of Kumbakonam .

Roche was the first native Catholic to be appointed bishop in a traditional mission country. During his tenure, he paid particular attention to the development of churches, schools and the ecclesiastical infrastructure in his diocese. On June 26, 1953, he renounced the bishopric and was appointed titular bishop of Amadassa .
