Alfred Karindi
Alfred Karindi (born May 17, 1935 to Alfred Karafin jul. / May 30, 1901 greg. In the village Kõnnu, today village Ongassaare , rural community Illuka , Estonia ; † 13. April 1969 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian composer and organist.
life and work
Alfred Karindi worked as a music teacher in a Tartu primary school from 1921 to 1927 . In addition, he studied composition with Heino Eller at the Higher Music School in Tartu until 1927 and organ and composition at the Tallinn Conservatory (now the Estonian Theater and Music Academy ) until 1931 . He was initially employed as a teacher at the Higher Music School in Tartu from 1925 to 1928, then from 1928 to 1932 at the University of Tartu . He also worked as an organist in Tartu and Tallinn. From 1940 to 1950 he was a lecturer in music theory and organ at the Tallinn State Conservatory, from 1946 with the title of professor.
After the occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union , Karindi was arrested in 1950. He was imprisoned in Mordovia until 1954 before he could return to his homeland. In 1956 he was rehabilitated in the course of the de-Stalinization . From 1955 until his death in 1969 he was able to work again as a music professor in Tallinn.
Alfred Karindi has directed famous Estonian choirs in his life. In 1947 and 1965 he conducted the Estonian Song Festival . Above all, however, he has become known as the composer of numerous pieces for choir which are now very popular in Estonia. In addition, he composed a. a. a symphony (1958), four organ and two piano sonatas.
Alfred Karindi is the father of the Estonian actor and theater director Jüri Karindi (* 1942).
