The princess with the donkey skin (alternative title: The donkey skin ; original title: Russian Ослиная шкура , Oslinaja schkura ) is a Soviet fairy tale film by Nadezhda Koschewerowa from 1982.

action

King Gaston has a gold donkey who is chased into the forest when he no longer even gives silver and copper coins. Here he falls victim to the wolves and the good sorceress picks up his fur. A little later, the baptism of the newborn Princess Theresa is celebrated at the king's court. The good sorceress is present as godmother, but the uninvited evil sorceress also appears. She prophesies that the princess will be beautiful and happy if ... She leaves the prophecy open and the poets and sages of the land are brought to court to complete the spell. Poet Aurevoir finds the solution, but forgets it. Only the good sorceress knows what he was thinking.

Exactly 17 years have passed since then, the Queen has died and Gaston has married the glorious Georgetta as a new woman. She wants Gaston to go out into the world and to subdue all peoples. In order to get money for it, Gaston wants to forcibly marry Theresa with a rich king. Theresa, however, loves Prince Jaques - in times of need she lies to him that she no longer loves him, and he leaves her disappointed. Nevertheless, Theresa flees from the altar. She hurries to the good sorceress, who gives her magic water to wash her face with and turns her clothes into rags. Gaston and his men don't recognize Theresa, who now resembles a beggar with a dirty face and matted hair. The good sorceress gives Theresa a ring, which she should press in the greatest longing for the past - so she transforms back into the princess. She also gives Theresa the donkey's skin to wear as a cloak.

Theresa goes out into the world, befriends other vagrants, is almost arrested when she exposes a dandy in a bar, and by some chance ends up in Madame Bourabeau's house, where she is employed as a housekeeper. Madame is the wife of the notorious robber Bourabeau, who takes Prince Jacques prisoner on one of his tours. Since he doesn't want to say who he is, Bourabeau wants to murder him the next day. Theresa succeeds in stealing the dungeon key from Bourabeau and handing these Jaques through the bars. He only sees her hand with the ring and swears to marry his lifesaver. A little later Theresa presses the ring at the river and becomes a princess. She dances alone in the meadow where Jaques sees her. When he reached the meadow, however, Theresa turned back into a beggar and pretended that no one else was with her. Jaques doesn't recognize them. In response to her questions, he tells her that he no longer wants to marry his first love, Theresa, but will take the woman who saved his life as his wife. A little later Theresa sends him the ring in a letter and Jaques announces in the country that she will be his wife if the ring fits. Countless noble ladies come to the castle to try on the ring. Theresa also goes and may try the ring on if the prince so requests, even if everyone advises against it. The ring fits her and she transforms into Princess Theresa in front of the prince's eyes. Both are going to get married.

In retrospect, Poet Aurevoir notes that his saying at the time was that the princess will be beautiful and happy if she proves worthy of it - which she has proven in her time as a beggar with the donkey skin.

The princess with the donkey skin is based on fairy tale motifs by Charles Perrault . The film was released in Soviet cinemas in December 1982 and ran for the first time on November 17, 1983 under the title Die Eselshaut on DFF 2 on GDR television. On February 3, 1984 it was released in GDR cinemas under the title The Princess with the Donkey Skin . Icstorm released the film on DVD in January 2005 as part of the series The most beautiful fairy tale classics in Russian film history .
