The village of Vaivara ( Estonian Vaivara küla ) is located in Ida-Viru County ( East Wierland ) in northeast Estonia . It is the capital of the uniform rural community ( Vaivara vald ).

Description and history

Vaivara (German Waiwara ) has 169 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012). It is south of the city of Sillamäe . The distance to Narva is about 25 km.

The place was first mentioned in 1424 as Wayver .

The place is on the railway line , which was completed in 1870 and connects the Estonian capital Tallinn with the border town of Narva . The railway line is now operated by the Estonian Edelaraudtee .

The historic station building was destroyed during the Second World War. A new stone building was built during the Stalin era.
