The two companies Edelaraudtee and Elektriraudtee ensure the operation of the route .

history

The line was opened by the Baltic Railway in 1870. It was originally part of the railway network of the Russian Empire from Paldiski to Saint Petersburg .

Operation today

A maximum of five passenger trains per day and direction run all the way from Tallinn to Narva .

AS Go Rail operates international trains on this route from Tallinn to Saint Petersburg and Moscow . The night train to Moscow departs Tallinn at 6:00 p.m. and arrives in Narva at 9:00 p.m. In the opposite direction, the train leaves Narva at 5:15 a.m. and arrives in Tallinn at 8:15 a.m. The express train D 810 runs daily in the direction of Saint Petersburg, leaving Tallinn at 8:03 am and arriving in Narva at 10:30 am (journey time 2 hours 27 minutes). In the opposite direction, the train D 809 leaves Narva at 20:27 and arrives in Tallinn at 22:58 after a journey time of 2 hours 31 minutes. In addition, the express train D 812 runs on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays (departure Tallinn 3:27 pm, arrival Narva 5:52 pm). The counter train D 811 leaves Narva on Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays at 10:00 and arrives in Tallinn at 12:30. (As of August 2014).

Elron also operates other passenger trains that use the line . A pair of trains runs from Tallinn to Narva every morning and evening (journey time approx. 2 hours 45 minutes). In addition, there is a pair of trains from Tallinn to Rakvere , which go to Tallinn in the morning and back from Tallinn in the evening. Between Tallinn and Aegviidu , these trains only stop in Kitseküla , Tallinn – Ülemiste and Kehra, but changes can be made in Aegviidu as soon as possible.

In addition, eight Elron trains run between Tallinn and Tapa , all of which continue to Tartu or Valga . Four of these trains stop at all stations between Aegviidu and Tapa, but between Tallinn and Aegviidu only in Kitseküla, Tallinn-Ülemiste and Kehra. Here, too, a change in Aegviidu enables you to reach the remaining stations. The other four trains are express trains and stop between Tallinn and Tapa only in Tallinn-Ülemiste.

In order to also serve the Narva – Tartu route, all trains from Elron from Narva in Tapa are connected to the express trains in the direction of Tartu and vice versa.

In the agglomeration between Tallinn and Aegviidu, on the electrified section, other Elron trains run as S-Bahns .

There is also considerable freight traffic on the route, especially between Kohtla and Vaivara, where there are large industrial areas.
