railroad

The place is on the railway line opened in 1870 between the Estonian capital Tallinn and the then Russian capital Saint Petersburg . In 1897 the Sonda train station was inaugurated. The village experienced a rapid economic boom. In particular, forestry settled in and around Sonda. The company Stakelberg & Dehn opened the first sawmill, other companies followed.

On August 1, 1926, a branch line was ceremoniously put into operation. A 62.6 km long narrow-gauge railway connected Sonda with the town of Mustvee on the banks of Lake Peipus . The operation on the non-electrified railway line with a total of 16 stops was finally stopped in 1971.

Another railway connection ran from Sonda to the cement works in Aseri .
