Jerry Lamon Falwell Jr. (born June 17, 1962 in Lynchburg , Virginia ) is an American lawyer. Shortly after the death of his father, Jerry Falwell , he became rector of Liberty University in May 2007 . In early 2017, US President Donald Trump appointed him chairman of a commission to reform the United States Department of Education .

Life

Falwell Jr. was born to American fundamentalist Baptist preacher Jerry Falwell and his wife Macel, a housewife who also served as organist in her husband's church. Fallwell Jr. has a sister, Jean Ann "Jeannie," who is about two years his junior, and a brother, Jonathan , who is about four years his junior and who heads the father's first mainstay, Thomas Road Baptist Church . In mid-1989, Falwell Jrs. first son to be born in 2016 at his father's university.

Education and career

Fallwell Jr. initially attended various private schools in the greater Lynchburg area. He received a BA in Religious Studies from his father's college . He then studied at the University of Virginia law , which he graduated with a Juris Doctor from.

After his father's death in May 2007, Falwell Jr. became rector of Liberty University . He had to give up this office in August 2020 after a sex affair.

In 2012, Falwell Jr. met Donald Trump while giving his speech at Liberty University . In retrospect, he said he was immediately impressed with Trump. In the run-up to the Republican presidential primaries, Falwell Jr. began campaigning for Trump. This was followed by many of his followers on the religious right does not appreciate because Trump lifestyle indifferent with two divorces and Trump's stance on the abortion question is not compatible with the set of values of the religious right. He gave a speech on graduation day at the 2016 Republican National Convention , where Trump was named candidate. He also had to step down after a sex scandal became known in August 2020.
