Tazewell County is located in southwest Virginia, borders West Virginia to the north and has an area of 1,347 square kilometers with no significant water surface. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Bland County , Smyth County , Russell County, and Buchanan Counties .

history

It was formed on December 20, 1799 from parts of Russell County and Wythe County. It was named after Henry Tazewell , a judge and US Senator from Virginia.

As of the 2000 census , Tazewell County had 44,598 people in 18,277 households and 13,232 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.16 percent white, 2.29 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.61 percent Asian and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.62 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.51 percent of the population.

Of the 18,277 households, 28.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.2 percent were married couples living together, 10.8 percent were single mothers, 27.6 percent were non-families, 25.2 percent were single households and 11.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over.
