Lee County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 23,589 residents and a population density of 21 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Jonesville . The county is one of the poorest counties in the United States. The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Lee County is located in the extreme southwest of Virginia, borders Kentucky to the north and Tennessee to the south, and covers an area of ​​1,133 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wise County and Scott Counties .

history

It was formed on October 25, 1792 from parts of Russell County and Scott County. It was named after Light Horse Harry Lee , the governor of Virginia from 1791 to 1794.
