Lee County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 23,589 residents and a population density of 21 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Jonesville . The county is one of the poorest counties in the United States. The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Lee County is located in the extreme southwest of Virginia, borders Kentucky to the north and Tennessee to the south, and covers an area of 1,133 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wise County and Scott Counties .
history
It was formed on October 25, 1792 from parts of Russell County and Scott County. It was named after Light Horse Harry Lee , the governor of Virginia from 1791 to 1794.

According to the 2000 census , Lee County had 23,589 people. 235 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 9,706 households and 6,852 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.44 percent white, 0.44 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian and 0.08 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.64 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.51 percent of the population.
Of the 9,706 households, 29.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.0 percent were married couples living together, 11.7 percent were single mothers, 29.4 percent were non-families, 27.0 percent were single households, and 12.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.8 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 91.3 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 22,972 , and the median income for a family is $ 28,525. Males had a median income of $ 27,579 versus $ 19,370 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,625. 20.2 percent of families and 23.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 30.1 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 23.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
