The dark star hyacinth ( Chionodoxa sardensis ) is a species of star hyacinth ( Chionodoxa ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

features

The dark star hyacinth is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches stature heights of 5 to 15 (rarely up to 40) centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs. The 4 to 12 flowers are bright gentian blue, their center is not white and they are weakly nodding. The tepals measure 8 to 10 (rarely up to 17) × 2 to 4 millimeters and are fused together over 30 to 40% of their length. The stylus are 2 to 3 millimeters long.

The flowering time is in April, sometimes it begins in March.

Occurrence

The dark star hyacinth occurs in western Turkey in Boz-Dagh and Mahmout Dagh near Izmir in pine forests on moist northern slopes at altitudes of about 550 meters. In Germany it is considered to be a naturalized neophyte .

use

The dark star hyacinth is widely used as an ornamental plant in groups of shrubs, natural gardens and parks. The species has been in culture since around 1887.
