Carroll County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 29,245 residents and a population density of 24 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Hillsville .

Carroll County is located in southwest Virginia, bordering North Carolina to the south and has an area of 1,237 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Floyd County , Patrick County , Grayson County , Wythe County, and Pulaski County .
history
It was formed in 1842 from parts of Grayson County and Patrick County. It was named after Charles Carroll of Maryland , a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

According to the United States Census 2000 , there were 29,245 people in 12,186 households and 8,786 families in Carroll County. The population density was 24 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.97 percent white, 0.44 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian and 0.82 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.53 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.64 percent of the population.
Of the 12,186 households, 27.8 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.7 percent were married couples living together, 8.6 percent were single mothers, 27.9 percent were non-families, 25.4 percent were single households and 12.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.80.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.1 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 17.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 94.1 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,597 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,755. Males had a median income of $ 25,907 versus $ 19,697 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,475. 8.7 percent of families and 12.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 15.7 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 14.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
