William Edward Lori OESSH (born May 6, 1951 in Louisville , Kentucky , Kentucky , United States ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Baltimore .

Life

Lori studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Seminary of Saint Pius X in Erlanger , Kentucky and at Mount Saint Mary's Seminary . At the Catholic University of America , he was with a thesis on the Scriptures doctorate . Lori was ordained a priest on May 14, 1977 by William Wakefield Baum . After pastoral work he was secretary to Archbishop James Aloysius Hickey , later chancellor, moderator in the curia and vicar general in the Archdiocese of Washington .

On February 28, 1995, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Bulla and Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Washington. He was ordained bishop by Cardinal Hickey on April 20 of the same year. Co- consecrators were Cardinal Baum , who has meanwhile been appointed major penitentiary , and the Bishop of Charlotte , William George Curlin .

On January 23, 2001, Lori was named Bishop of Bridgeport . He was chairman of the boards of the Sacred Heart University in Fairfield and the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC

Since 2001 he has been chairman of the Faith and Religious Freedom Commissions of the United States Bishops' Conference (USCCB). In 2002, President George W. Bush appointed him to the President's Committee on Mental Retardation . In 2002 he was entrusted with the management of the Ad Hoc Committee on Sexual Abuse ; he initiated the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People . Since 2005 he has been the supreme chaplain of the Knights of Columbus .

On March 20, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to succeed Cardinal Edwin Frederick O'Brien as 16th Archbishop of Baltimore . His inauguration took place on May 16 of the same year. In 2012, Lori was appointed to succeed Cardinal O'Brien as Grand Prior of the USA MIDDLE ATLANTIC Lieutenancy of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

During his tenure, Lori was considered a critic of US President Barack Obama's health policy .

From September 13, 2018 to August 22, 2019, he was also Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston for the duration of the Sedis vacancy .
