William G. Curlin

William George Curlin (born August 30, 1927 in Portsmouth , Virginia , † December 23, 2017 in Charlotte , North Carolina ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Charlotte .

Life

After his theological training, William George Curlin was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Washington on May 25, 1957 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Rossmarkaeum and auxiliary bishop in Washington on November 2, 1988 . The episcopal ordination donated him the Archbishop of Washington , James Aloysius Cardinal Hickey , on December 20 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Eugene Antonio Marino SSJ , Archbishop of Atlanta , and Álvaro Corrada del Rio SJ , Auxiliary Bishop in Washington.

He was named Bishop of Charlotte on February 22, 1994 and solemnly inducted into office on April 13 of the same year. On September 10, 2002, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Curlin was the conventual chaplain of the Order of Malta and was awarded the Order of Merit Pro Merito Melitensi (Grand Cross pro piis meritis).
