Patrick Sheridan

Patrick Joseph Thomas Sheridan , usually Patrick J. Sheridan (born March 10, 1922 in New York City , † December 2, 2011 ibid), was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in New York .

Life

Patrick Sheridan, son of a family with seven children, grew up in the vicinity of the Holy Name of Jesus parish on New York's West Side . He studied after graduating from Cathedral College, New York, NY, philosophy and Catholic theology at the Seminary "St. Joseph ”in Dunwoodie / Yonkers , NY. He was ordained a priest on March 1, 1947 and served as vicar at St. James the Apostle in Carmel. He received a master's degree in education from the University of Chicago . In 1949 he became parish vicar in Our Lady of Victory in Manhattan , in 1956 in Corpus Christi in Manhattan. He joined the New York Apostolate Mission Band in 1957 , a group of priests who preached the results of the Second Vatican Council in the Archdiocese of New York ; In 1965 he became head of this group. In 1967 he became pastor of Blessed Sacrament in Manhattan.

After brief teaching at Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx , he was named Episcopal Vicar for Northeast Bronx and Pastor of Holy Rosary in 1976. In 1982 he was appointed Episcopal Vicar for Central Westchester . From 1980 to 1985 he was pastor of St. Joseph in Brownsville . Cardinal John Joseph O'Connor appointed him Vicar General of the Archdiocese of New York in 1987 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Cursola and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of New York on October 30, 1990 . The Archbishop of New York, Cardinal John Joseph O'Connor, donated him episcopal ordination on December 12, 1990; Co-consecrators were the New York Auxiliary Bishops Patrick Vincent Ahern and Anthony Francis Mestice . In 1993 he was appointed Cancellarius Curiae and supervised the diocesan seminars. In 1995 he was the organizer of Pope John Paul II's visit to New York and Mass in Central Park .

In 1998 he was honored with the Catholic Home Bureau's Humanitarian Award . In 1999 he received the Medal of Life Award from Pius XII Youth and Family Services . He was a member of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and the Order of Malta .

On January 15, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. Patrick Sheridan was considered one of the most popular clergy in the archdiocese. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery , Queens.
