The West Side is part of the New York borough of Manhattan .

location

The West Side is on the side of Manhattan Island that meets the Hudson River and faces New Jersey . The Fifth Avenue , Central Park and the southern Broadway separate the West Side of the East Side of Manhattan.

Central Park divides the middle part of Manhattan into the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side . This is also reflected in the street names: the "east streets" are located east of Fifth Avenue and the "west streets" are west of Fifth Avenue.

All of Manhattan including the West Side

South of Central Park, Fifth Avenue divides Manhattan into east and west. In the south it meets Washington Square Park . Here Broadway takes over the division between east and west, until ultimately the division into east and west in the maze of streets at the southern tip of Lower Manhattan dissolves more and more.

The Lower East Side is located on the eastern southern tip of Manhattan, which originally included the East Village to the north . However, there is no counterpart in the sense of a "Lower West Side" in the west. The opposite of the East Village is the West Village .

quarter

The main areas of the West Side are (from north to south): West Harlem , Morningside Heights , Manhattan Valley , Upper West Side , Hell's Kitchen , Chelsea , West Village , SoHo and Tribeca .

traffic

The entire West Side is accessible by the 8th Avenue and West Side subway lines. The main north-south connections are the Henry Hudson Parkway in the north and the West Side Highway in the south. Both expressways are separated from the west coast of the island by the Hudson River Greenway .

Urban development

If New York City had been awarded the contract to host the 2012 Summer Olympics, the West Side Stadium on the Hudson River would probably have been built as the Olympic Stadium over the sidings there at Penn Station . This stadium was later to become the home of the New York Jets . After London won the 2012 Summer Olympics, this $ 2 billion project disappeared into a drawer.

Then came the plan for the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project with a mixture of residential and office buildings to ultimately upgrade the West Side in this area.
