Joseph Roduit CRSA (born December 17, 1939 in Saillon , Canton of Valais , † December 17, 2015 in Saint-Maurice , Canton of Valais ) was a Swiss religious and abbot of the Territorial Abbey of Saint-Maurice .

Life

Joseph Roduit joined the order of the Augustinian Canons in 1960, made his profession on November 15, 1964 and was ordained a priest on September 4, 1965 . Roduit studied theology at the University of Freiburg from 1961 to 1964 and then until 1965 at the Papal Athenaeum Angelicum in Rome.

In 1984 he became prior and general vicar of the territorial abbey for 10 years and then worked as novice master until 1999 . The Canons of the Abbey elected him on April 5, 1999 as the 94th Abbot of Saint-Maurice . Pope John Paul II confirmed this election on May 14 of the same year. Joseph Roduit was introduced to the office and received the abbot's benediction on July 31 of the same year. As a motto he chose Via, Veritas, Vita . As abbot of the Territorial Abbey, he was a member of the Swiss Bishops' Conference .

Joseph Roduit was involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land and was awarded the Palm of Jerusalem by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem . In 2001 he was appointed Grand Officer of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master Carlo Cardinal Furno and invested in the Basilica minor Notre-Dame du Valentin in Lausanne by Henri Cardinal Schwery , Grand Prior of the Swiss Lieutenancy .

On March 18, 2015, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.
