The Roman Catholic Church Notre-Dame du Valentin is located in the Swiss city of Lausanne in the canton of Vaud and belongs to the diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg . In 1992 Pope John Paul II raised the church to the rank of minor basilica .

history

During the Reformation in 1536, Catholic services in Lausanne were abolished and only allowed again in 1798. At first they were practiced again in private homes. From 1812 Catholic services were allowed to be held in the Temple de la Mercerie, but this church was also used by other denominations. Because of this unsatisfactory situation, the construction of a new church on avenue de l'Université began, but was never completed due to a landslide.

At the new location at 3 rue du Valentin, construction of Notre-Dame du Valentin in neoclassicism began in 1832 under the direction of the architect Henri Perregaux . It is the first Catholic church in Lausanne after the Reformation and its largest today. The consecration took place on May 31, 1835.

Notre-Dame du Valentin today

In 1932 the church was restored and expanded under Fernand Dumas . The outside staircase, the portico and the 38 meter high bell tower also date from this period. The choir was designed in 1934 by Gino Severini from Italy in the style of Futurism . The fresco is in Byzantine style and shows scenes from the life of the Blessed Virgin. In the center of the picture Mary is shown with a green cloak and the baby Jesus on her arm. To the right of it you can see the Annunciation to the left of it the coronation of the Virgin. To this day the church is the Catholic center of Lausanne and Vaud.
