The Sichuan Deutzia ( Deutzia setchuenensis ) is a shrub with white flowers from the hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae). The natural range of the species is in western China. It is rarely planted as an ornamental shrub .

description

The Sichuan Deutzia is a shrub up to 2 meters high . The branches carrying flowers are brown or yellowish brown, 8 to 12, sometimes up to 20 centimeters long with four to six leaves. The leaves have a 3 to 5 millimeter long stem. The leaf blade is simple, ovate, ovate-oblong or ovate-lanceolate, 3 to 8 centimeters long and 1 to 5 centimeters wide, pointed long, with a rounded or broadly wedge-shaped base and finely serrated leaf margin. Three to four pairs of nerves are formed, which are clearly visible on the underside of the leaf. The upper side of the leaf is rough and covered with three- to five- or six-pointed star hairs , which rarely have a central hair; the underside is yellowish green to greenish and covered with four- to seven- or eight-pointed star hairs with a wart-shaped base.

The inflorescences are 1.5 to 6 centimeters long and 2 to 8 centimeters in diameter, slightly to heavily branched, loose umbels of six to 50 approximately 1 centimeter wide flowers with a thin inflorescence axis. The flower stalk is 3 to 10 millimeters long. The flower cups is occupied with a diameter of about 3 millimeters and 3 millimeters long and dense with ten to zwölfstrahligen star hair. The calyx lobes are broadly triangular, about 1.5 millimeters long and 2 to 3 millimeters wide and pointed. The petals are white, ovate-oblong, 5 to 12 millimeters long and 2 to 3 millimeters wide. The outer stamens are 5 to 6 millimeters long, the teeth of the stamens are elongated or lanceolate, are horizontal and reach to the anthers or beyond. The inner stamens are shorter than the outer, the stamens are bilobed at the tip and the anthers grow outside about in the middle of the stamens. Three pens are formed. The capsule fruits are round and have a diameter of 4 to 5 millimeters. The calyx tips remain bent back on the fruits. The Sichuan Deutzia flowers from April to July, the fruits ripen from June to September.

Occurrence and location requirements

The natural range is in the temperate zone of China in the province of Fujian , in the north of Guangdong and Guangxi , in Guizhou , Hubei , Jiangxi , Sichuan and in the northwest of Yunnan . The Sichuan Deutzia grows in dense forests, thickets and on mountain slopes at an altitude of 300 to 2000 meters on fresh, slightly acidic to slightly alkaline, sandy-loamy to loamy, moderately nutrient-rich soils in sunny to light-shaded locations. The species loves warmth and is usually frost hardy .

Systematics

The Sichuan Deutzie ( Deutzia setchuenensis ) is a kind of the genus of deutzia ( Deutzia ). It is assigned to the subfamily Hydrangeoideae and the tribe Philadelpheae in the hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae) . The species was first scientifically described in 1896 by Adrien René Franchet . The genus name Deutzia is reminiscent of the Dutch councilor Johan van der Deutz (1790 to 1858) from Amsterdam, a sponsor of the Swedish naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg , who named the genus. The specific epithet setchuenensis refers to the distribution area in Sichuan.

There are three varieties .

  • Deutzia setchuenensis var. Corymbiflora (Lemoine ex André) Rehder with richly branched, 4 to 6 centimeters long and 5 to 8 centimeters wide umbels made of 12 to 50 flowers. The variety blooms in May and the fruits ripen from July to August. The distribution area is in dense forests at altitudes of 800 to 1500 meters in the provinces of Hubei and Sichuan. The variety was first described by Andre in 1898 as a separate species under the name Deutzia corymbiflora ( Basionym ). Another synonym is Deutzia fargesii .
  • Deutzia setchuenensis var. Longidentata Rehder with little branched, 1.5 to 4 centimeters long and 5 to 8 centimeters diameter umbels of 6 to 12 flowers. The teeth of the outer stamens are lanceolate and extend beyond the anthers. The variety blooms from April to July. It grows in thickets and on mountain slopes in western Sichuan Province.
  • Deutzia setchuenensis var. Setchuenensis with slightly branched, 1.5 to 4 centimeters long and 5 to 8 centimeters diameter cymes of 6 to 12 flowers. The teeth of the outer stamens are elongated and reach about to the anthers. The variety blooms from April to July, the fruits ripen from June to September. It grows in thickets and on mountain slopes at heights of 300 to 2000 meters in the provinces of Fujian, Guangdongs, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi and Yunnan.

use

The Sichuan Deutzia is sometimes used as an ornamental shrub because of its flowers .
