Maria Theresia Scherer

Maria Theresia Scherer (born October 31, 1825 in Meggen in the canton of Lucerne ; † June 16, 1888 in Ingenbohl ) was a Swiss nun and the first superior general of the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross . She was beatified in Rome on October 29, 1995 .

Life

Anna Maria Katharina Scherer attended elementary school in Meggen, where she was born. Then she did an apprenticeship in household work and health services at the Citizens Hospital in Lucerne . After meeting the Capuchin Father Theodosius Florentini , Anna Maria Scherer joined the order of the Menzing Sisters in 1845 . She passed the teaching examination as an autodidact and worked as a teacher in Galgenen , Baar and Oberägeri . In 1852 she became matron in the Kreuzspital in Chur . In 1856 Sr. Maria Theresia Scherer joined the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross and later became its Superior General.
