The community is at an altitude of 300 to 1400 meters.

history

Originally the valley was divided into ten communities. At the beginning of the 1970s, the two southernmost communities Langenau and Enkenstein were incorporated into the town of Schopfheim as part of the municipal reorganization of Baden-Württemberg . The other eight communities joined together in the Small Wiesental Community Administration Association. With a population of between 166 and 657, they were among the smallest independent municipalities in Baden-Württemberg in terms of inhabitants and were dependent on subsidies from the state budget to carry out their tasks.

Following the announcement by the Freiburg Regional Council that it would no longer grant these so-called communities in need from 2010 to compensate for their administrative budgets, the merger of the eight communities was considered as a way out of the looming financial crisis.

In a citizens' hearing on July 6, 2008, 87 percent of voters in the eight municipalities spoke out in favor of founding a unified municipality, with a low turnout . On October 8, 2008, the municipal councils of the eight municipalities followed this vote and sealed the merger on January 1, 2009. The contract was signed on October 21, 2008, and at the same time it was decided to dissolve the municipal administration association.

With a certificate from the Minister of the Interior of Baden-Württemberg on June 4, 2014, the municipality was granted the right to use a coat of arms. The coat of arms designed by Gerhard Graf, Karlsruhe, shows the Baden colors of red and gold. The eight-branched fir tree symbolizes both the landscape and the eight districts; the Wellengöpel stands for the flowing streams Köhlgartenwiese and Kleine Wiese .
