Phthisis bulbi (Latin for "eyeball shrinkage") is the medical term for the shrinkage and atrophy of the eyeball , mostly due to recurrent inflammation of the eye or severe trauma . The most common pathomechanism is atrophy of the ciliary body . The aqueous humor produced there dries up, causing the globe to shrink, and due to a lack of nutrition, important structures of the eye atrophy. Phthisis bulbi can also be congenital.
