history

Local history since it was first mentioned

Bürchau, a high medieval clearing site , was first mentioned in a document in 1278. It remains unclear whether the place belonged in earlier times to the rule of the Lords of Waldeck or to that of the noble free von Rötteln . From 1316 it belonged to the margraviate of Hachberg-Sausenberg and from 1503 to the margraviate of Baden and the margravate of Baden-Durlach . In addition to the sovereigns, the monastery of St. Blasien in particular owned land . The place was initially administered from Tegernau and only received its own bailiff in 1781. Around 1740 part of the population emigrated to Transylvania .

Incorporation

Since January 1, 2009, the formerly independent municipality of Bürchau has been part of the newly founded municipality of Kleines Wiesental. The district also has a local headmistress, Katharina Matzken, and a local council with four members.

coat of arms

A silver birch tree in red on a golden shield base. The talking coat of arms was designed by the General State Archives in Karlsruhe and accepted by the municipality in 1902. The silver birch refers to the original form of the place name Birchowe , which referred to a meadow overgrown with birches. Previously, the community had carried the Baden coat of arms in the seal, which the communities were then prohibited. However, red and gold also appear in the local coat of arms and are a reminder of centuries of belonging to the margraviate of Baden-Durlach .
