Since January 1, 2009, Wies has been part of the Kleines Wiesental municipality in the Lörrach district in Baden-Württemberg .
geography
location
Wies is located in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park in the valley of the Kleine Wiese at an altitude of 520 to 1220 meters. More than half of the former municipal area is forested and has several streams flowing through it. Wies is located north of the state road 140, which , coming from Tegernau , leads up to the Lipplepass in the Kandertal .

The villages of Wies, Demberg, Fischenberg, Kühlenbronn, Stockmatt and Wambach and the farms of Ritterhof and Sägmatt are in the area of the former municipality of Wies. The Burgacker desert is located in the former municipality .
history
Wies was first mentioned in a document in 1259 as Wisa . Dembach was mentioned earlier in 1100 as the property of the St. Blasien monastery. In 1278 Wies and Kühlenbronn also fell to the St. Blasien monastery . In 1809 Wies was assigned to the office of Schopfheim , in 1936 it came to the district of Lörrach . On January 1, 2009, the previously independent community of Wies was incorporated into the newly founded community of Kleines Wiesental.

Until its dissolution on January 1, 2009, the former community of Wies belongs to the community administration association “Kleines Wiesental” based in Tegernau .

The coat of arms shows a golden rake on a green background. The rake as a haymaking device should allude to the place name "Wies".
economy
With the decline in agriculture, Wies became a place of residence for commuters who earn their living in Lörrach and the Basel area . However, tourism is an asset of the place: The holiday village near Stockmatt and various guesthouses form the tourist infrastructure.
Personalities
Werner Forßmann , who later won the Nobel Prize for Medicine, practiced in Wambach from 1945 to 1956. He also spent the last few years here until his death in 1979.
