The Kolowratshöhle (also Kolowrathöhle ) is a cave in the Untersberg in the Berchtesgaden Alps in the area of the municipality of Grödig . It was named after Count Franz Anton von Kolowrat-Liebsteinsky .

description

The ice cave was explored as early as the 19th century . The ice surface in the entrance hall on the north side of the Untersberg massif was even used for ice skating, but has melted further and further after the cave entrance was enlarged.

The connection with the Gamslöchern has been known since 1979 ( Gamslöcher-Kolowrat cave system ), and since 2004 with the Salzburgerschacht ( Gamslöcher-Kolowrat-Salzburgerschacht system ). The cave system has so far been explored over a total length of 38 kilometers to a depth of more than 1100 meters. It is assumed that the Kolowratshöhle, together with the giant thing shaft cave and the wind holes, form a cave system that is at least 70 kilometers long and runs through the entire mountain, but the connecting caves are mostly under water. The drainage probably takes place via the Fürstenbrunn spring cave .

Trivia

Gustav Freiherr von Lerchenfeld , Bavarian politician and former President of the Chamber of Deputies, died in 1866 as a result of a fall in the cave.
