Genia Kühmeier

Genia Kühmeier (* 1975 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian soprano .

Genia Kühmeier grew up in Grödig . She attended elementary school, an economics high school and an educational institution for kindergarten pedagogy in Salzburg. In 1993 she dropped out of school and studied vocal pedagogy at the Mozarteum University until 1997 and solo singing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna from 1997 , where she a. a. She took master classes with the chamber singers Ruthilde Boesch , Marjana Lipovšek and Margarita Lilowa .

In 2002 she won the 8th International Mozart Competition in Salzburg in the singing category, and in 2003 Kühmeier became a member of the ensemble at the Vienna State Opera as a Karajan scholarship holder . There she was awarded the Eberhard Waechter Medal in 2003 for her role as Inès in Gaetano Donizetti's La favorite . In April 2003 she made her debut at the Vienna State Opera with Pamina in Mozart's Magic Flute , and in December 2004 she performed in Salieri's L'Europa riconosciuta at the reopening of La Scala in Milan .

At the Salzburg Festival in 2005 and 2006 she sang Pamina under the musical direction of Riccardo Muti . For the 50th anniversary of the reopening of the Vienna State Opera after the Second World War, she will perform as Sophie ( Der Rosenkavalier ) at the gala concert . In November 2007 Genia Kühmeier made her US debut with Pamina in Mozart's Magic Flute under the baton of Kirill Petrenko at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, followed in the fall of 2008 by house debuts with Ilia ( Idomeneo by WA Mozart) in San Francisco and with the role of Micaela ( Carmen by G. Bizet) in Los Angeles.

In the 2010/2011 season she returned to the Bavarian State Opera and the Vienna State Opera with Pamina in Die Zauberflöte . There were also concerts in Munich under Mariss Jansons , in Vienna under Nikolaus Harnoncourt and in Geneva under Marek Janowski. In December she performed again at Christmas in Vienna in the Wiener Konzerthaus .

The singer is married and lives with her two children in Austria . After canceling various appearances in spring 2014, it was announced in April 2014 that her husband had passed away in March.
