The Zeppezauerhaus is an Alpine Club hut belonging to the Austrian Alpine Club at an altitude of 1,663 meters just below the Geiereck on the north side of the Untersberg . It is located in the Berchtesgaden Alps in the Salzburger Land high above the state capital Salzburg and only a few meters from the border with the Berchtesgadener Land .
Due to the easy accessibility via the Untersberg cable car , the shelter is a popular destination for day visitors, who stop here and enjoy the view of Salzburg. In addition, the Zeppezauerhaus is a good base for mountaineers who, despite the cable car, climb from the valley and from here can undertake numerous tours over the entire Untersberg, as well as for long-distance hikers on the Rupertiweg . The area also offers the best conditions for climbers and cave explorers. In winter you can climb up the Reitsteig as a ski tour , but the danger of avalanches must be taken into account.
history
As early as 1872, the Salzburg section of the PES planned to build a refuge on the Untersberg. When the flow of tourists increased enormously after the construction of the Dopplersteig, the development of the Kolowratshöhle and the Gamslöcher, the upper Rosittenalm and the Firmianalm were leased in 1874. In 1883 the Untersberghaus was built in just three months and officially opened on July 31, 1883.
On October 17, 1912, a defective stove caused a fire, as a result of which the shelter on the Untersberg burned down completely. In 1914 a larger shelter named after the chairman Moritz Zeppezauer was built and, given the current situation , opened to traffic without any opening ceremonies .
In the last few years the Zeppezauerhaus received exemplary systems for energy generation and wastewater disposal. At the same time, modern sanitary facilities were built and the entire hut was renovated.
