history

The history of the Toni-Lenz-Hütte is inextricably linked with the development of the nearby Schellenberg ice cave. This was first explored in 1874 and five years later two paths to the ice cave were laid out. Thomas Eder and Toni Lenz founded the Association for Speleology in Marktschellenberg in 1925 . It is thanks to this that the ice cave was developed as a show cave. In 1934 the bold rock path, named after Thomas Eder, was laid down from the Mittagscharte with passages and stairs. In 1936 the Schellenberg Speleological Association built a refuge below the ice cave, which Toni Lenz managed for years. Since 1950 it has officially been the Toni-Lenz-Hütte, which honors the long-time landlord for his services.
