Roman stone from Grödig
The so-called Römerstein von Grödig is a Roman votive stone mainly for the Roman god Jupiter from the early 3rd century from Grödig in the Salzburg-Umgebung district in the state of Salzburg .
description
The stone was uncovered as a built-in spoil during construction work on the cemetery wall in 1954 and then placed there at the entrance to the wall. Due to the former construction, the limestone stone (156 × 60 cm) shows continuous material fragments on the left side. The founder Turbonius Fuscinus, as beneficiary of Legio II Italica, guarded a Roman road to Iuvavum (Salzburg). The exact dating of the manufacture or installation of the consecration stone to the year 202 AD is given by the naming of the joint consulate of Septimius Severus and Caracalla .
The inscription reads:
"[I (ovi)] O (ptimo) M (aximo) / [et] d (is) d (eabusque) o (mnibus) / [3 T] urboni / [us] Fuscinus / [b (ene) f ( iciarius)] co (n) s (ularis) leg (ionis) / [II] It (alicae) P (iae) F (idelis) pro se / [et suis] v (otum) s (olvit) l (ibens) m (erito) / [dom] inis nn (ostris) / [Severo] III et / [Antoni] no / [co (n)] s (ulibus) "
