Christian Pongruber

Christian Pongruber ( November 17, 1920 in Bergheim , Land Salzburg - May 1, 2019 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ).

Life

Christian Pongruber was born into a farming family in the Bergheim district of Siggerwiesen. After attending elementary and secondary school , he worked briefly as an employee . In 1940 he was enlisted as a soldier for the Wehrmacht , in which he served until 1945. After his return to Austria, Pongruber took over his parents' farm as a farmer .

Pongruber began his political career in 1949 when he was elected to the Bergheim municipal council for the ÖVP . In 1954, after the death of the incumbent mayor Paul Gierlinger , Pongruber was elected mayor of his home municipality. Christian Pongruber then sat in Bergheim's mayor's office for 35 years; only in 1989 did he withdraw from all political positions.

In December 1959 Pongruber was sworn in as a member of the Federal Council in Vienna ; he remained Federal Councilor until July 1965. From 1968 to 1969 he was a member of the Salzburg State Parliament for the ÖVP .

From 1957 to 1966, he held the office of district party chairman for the Salzburg area within his party .
