The normal-gauge and electrified line lies along its entire length in the city of Salzburg and connects the Salzburg-Tyrolean Railway , from which it branches off at the northern end of the extensive railway facilities of Salzburg Central Station , with the western Salzburg-Lamprechtshausen railway line (Salzburg Local Railway). The connecting line is mainly used for freight traffic , the Bürmoos – Ostermiething railway line is connected to the rest of the Austrian railway network via the connecting track , and thus the freight stations of the Western Railway and the Local Railway, as well as the shunting yards and shelters. The Berchtesgadener Land Bahn railcars also use this route to reach their depot in the Itzling district .

The railway line Salzburg Hbf – Salzburg Itzling has been electrified since 2005 and is now operated by Salzburg AG, which was founded in 2000 (former Salzburger Stadtwerke ). A special feature is the catenary crossing with the Salzburg trolleybus in the course of the Elisabethstrasse level crossing, the voltage of which, in contrast to the 1000 volts DC voltage of the railway line, is only 600 volts DC.
