António Patrício (born March 7, 1878 in Porto , Portugal , † June 4, 1930 in Macau , then Portuguese China, now People's Republic of China ) was a Portuguese playwright, writer and diplomat. He is widely considered to be the foremost Portuguese playwright of symbolism .

Life

Patricio, who was born in Porto, first attended courses in mathematics at the university there in his hometown, then switched to the Escola Naval (the naval school) in Lisbon and finally studied medicine in Porto. 1908 exam and doctorate as a doctor, from then on worked as a diplomat. He was consul and attaché in various cities around the world, for example in Caracas , Canton , Bremen , London , Istanbul , Manaus , Athens , La Coruña . In Macau he died of complications from a heart condition.

As a writer and playwright, he was committed to symbolism and decadence literature. He also left lyrical and narrative literature. He also wrote for various well-known magazines of his time, such as A Aguia . His main field of activity, however, was the theater; his plays were played a lot in Portugal in his time and made him one of the leading dramatists in his country of his time. The theme of death was one of the themes that ran through his work like a red thread.
