Nunzio Galantino (born August 16, 1948 in Cerignola , Foggia Province , Italy ) is an Italian clergyman and president of the property administration of the Apostolic See . From 2011 to 2015 he was Bishop of Cassano all'Jonio and from 2013 to 2018 General Secretary of the Italian Bishops' Conference .

Life

Nunzio Galantino attended the diocesan seminary of the Ascoli Satriano diocese and studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Pontifical Regional Seminary in Benevento . On December 23, 1972, he received the sacrament of ordination . Then he was sub-rain of the seminary in Foggia . In 1974 he was at the University of Bari to the doctor of philosophy PhD , the teaching qualification obtained at state schools and then worked until 1977 as a lecturer at the Regional Seminary of Benevento and teacher of history and philosophy at public state schools. From 1977 he was a lecturer in theological anthropology as well as fundamental theology and dogmatics at the theological faculty of southern Italy in Naples . At the same time, from 1977 he was pastor of the parish of San Francesco d'Assisi in Cerignola. In 1981 the doctorate to Dr. theol. at the Theological Faculty of Southern Italy. Pope John Paul II awarded him the honorary title of Chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) on August 1, 1996 .

In 2001 Galantino became a full professor of theological anthropology at the Theological Faculty of Southern Italy. In 2004 he also took over the management of the National Service for Advanced Studies in Theology and Religious Studies of the Italian Bishops' Conference (CEI) .

On December 9, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Bishop of Cassano all'Jonio. He was ordained bishop by the Archbishop of Genoa , Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco , on February 25, 2012 in the Cathedral of San Pietro Apostolo in Cerignola; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Catanzaro-Squillace , Vincenzo Bertolone SdP , and the Bishop of Cerignola-Ascoli Satriano , Felice di Molfetta .

Pope Francis also appointed him on 28 December 2013 on an interim basis to the Secretary General of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), and confirmed him on March 25 of the following year for five years in this office. On February 28, 2015, Pope Francis accepted his renunciation of the diocese of Cassano all'Jonio. He retained the function of general secretary of the Bishops' Conference until 2018.

On June 26, 2018, Pope Francis appointed him President of the Property Administration of the Apostolic See .

Galantino works for various magazines for theology and philosophy with mostly anthropological articles. He is the author of numerous volumes and articles of an anthropological and theological nature.
