The ASD Castel di Sangro Calcio (officially: Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Castel di Sangro Calcio ) is an Italian football club from Castel di Sangro in the province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo .

The club's greatest achievement was its promotion to Serie B in 1996, a remarkable achievement when you consider the fact that the place only has 5900 residents. Even more notable is the fact that they stayed in Serie B for a second year. The first year in Seria B was described by the American author Joe McGinniss in his book The Miracle of Castel di Sangro . The colors of the jerseys are red and yellow. The club's home ground, the Teofilo Patini Stadium, has a capacity of 7,200 seats.

history

The history of football in Castel di Sangro began immediately after the Second World War when the priest Don Arbete organized football for the local youth. The championship operation for the team did not start until 1953 in the Terza Categoria, the lowest of all Italian leagues. The leap into the Seconda Categoria only succeeded after thirty years in 1983. The rise to the Prima Categoria succeeded two years later. The difference between Series C1 and C2 was very large, as C1 contained professionally managed teams, some of which had already played in Series A , such as B. Ascoli Calcio and US Lecce . For the club, staying in Serie C1 would have been a success, but by reaching second place they qualified for a playoff game against AS Gualdo Calcio . This could be completed successfully and qualified for a second playoff game against Ascoli, which was won on penalties.

The first year in Serie B was turbulent and only in the penultimate game was it possible to stay up. After relegation, the path went to C2 and in 2005 the club was excluded from Italian football. The club, founded in 2005, now plays in the Eccellenza Abruzzo, the sixth level of Italian football, which is contested in 28 regional leagues.
