A free quarter in the coat of arms is a heraldic image in heraldry .

It is a small field in the coat of arms, which stands out in the right or left place above (the upper corner ) in a special representation and size. It emerged from the crossing and is also named that way.

In the description it is free area or crossing called (because it is part of a quartering). The side on which the square is located must be reported (written on). Free quarters offset in the lower corners are, as is generally the case in German heraldry, rare and require special attention when describing the coat of arms .
Without another herald image in the selected corner, it is a single crossing.
Often there is the reduced square, also called the little crossing . If it shrinks to about 1/3 of the height and width of the shield, the heraldist calls it Lichteck (in the upper corner , the place in the third of the shield , on the right or left ). This exposed field position is used to insert symbols here.

A special name is the single angle in the shield. This is the free corner . This is a crossing of a very small field in one of the upper corners of the coat of arms in the head of the shield . The size is not the fourth part, but the eighth part of the shield.
