The Stadio Comunale Sant'Elia is a football stadium in the Italian city of Cagliari in Sardinia . For a long time it was the sporting home of the first division club Cagliari Calcio . In 2017 it was closed and is to be demolished for a new building.

history

The Stadio Sant'Elia opened in 1970. It replaced the Stadio Amsicora as the home ground of the Cagliari Calcio football club , which had won its only Italian championship to date in the 1969/70 season . At that time, the Sant'Elia offered space for up to 60,000 spectators, the attendance record dates back to the autumn of 1970, when around 70,000 visitors attended the match in the first round of the European Cup against AS Saint-Étienne .

In the run-up to the soccer World Cup in 1990 , the stadium was completely renovated and modernized, which reduced its capacity to 39,905 seats. At the World Cup, it hosted the three Group F games with the participation of the English team . As a result, the stadium was also used for athletics events.

In the summer of 2002 the Sant'Elia was renovated again. The reasons for this were the reduced audience interest in the games of Cagliari Calcio, in previous years mostly as an elevator team commuting between Serie A and B and the large distance between the spectator stands and the pitch. Behind both gates and on the side of the opposite stand, tubular steel stands were built on the existing synthetic track of the athletics facility, which transformed the Stadio Sant'Elia into a pure football stadium. Three quarters of the previously existing stadium can no longer be used today; only the main stand is still in use. The audience capacity therefore fell to 23,486 seats.

Planned new building and closure

Cagliari Calcio has been planning to build its own stadium since 2007. In September 2010 the plans for the new building were presented. The stadium should have a capacity of 23,600 covered seats and be completed in 2011. It was not to be built in Cagliari, but rather in Elmas , about eight kilometers away . To date, however, the planned private financing has not been secured and the final location has not been selected.

On May 16, 2012, the authorities declared the stadium to be a general security threat due to security deficiencies. Cagliari played the last games of the 2011/12 season at the Stadio Nereo Rocco in Trieste near the Slovenian border. For the 2012/13 season , Cagliari Calcio moved, initially for three years as a temporary solution, to the Stadio Is Arenas in Quartu Sant'Elena , which was rebuilt for the requirements of Serie A. On December 18, 2015, Cagliari Calcio presented pictures and a video for a future stadium. In 2017, work should start on a new stadium on the bottom of the old Sant'Elia . Plans for the new venue with 21,000 seats were presented to the city council of Cagliari. A replacement venue had to be found for the construction period. The temporary Sardegna Arena was built next to the stadium . The Stadio Sant'Elia should be replaced by a new building by 2019. In addition to the old Sant'Elia, the Sardegna Arena with 16,233 seats for eight million euros was built for the transition period . After the completion of the temporary venue, construction of the new Sant'Elia will begin. The new building should be completed in 2019.

In mid-April 2018, the winner was selected from an initial 25 designs. The Sportium / Manica Architecture design should be finalized by the end of the year. The fans and citizens were also included in the selection from the three final drafts. More than 5,000 people took part in the election. The new stadium with 25,000 seats should be completed in mid-2021.

After several delays, the obstacles to a new building now seem to have been removed. In November 2019, the city council of Cagliari approved the construction project with a large majority. The club has to wait another 60 days for final confirmation, after which the plans for the construction can be worked out precisely. The previous draft is being refined again in some places. The final appearance of the new venue should be clear by the end of 2020. Cagliari Calcio hopes that construction work will start in 2021. In 2024, the new stadium with 25,200 seats is expected to be available for an estimated 60 million euros. The design comes from a consortium called Sportium , which also includes the well-known MANICA Architecture office. A large shopping center adjoining the stadium is now to be built on another property nearby.

Return from Cagliari Calcio

Despite efforts, it was not possible to allay security concerns about the interim solution at Stadio Is Arenas. Even before the end of the 2012/13 season, Cagliari Calcio turned their backs on Is Arenas and moved back to the Stadio Nereo Rocco in Trieste for the final games. After negotiations in the summer of 2013 between Cagliari Calcio and the city as stadium owner, the football club returned to the Sant'Elia for the 2013/14 season . Cagliari played their first home games in Trieste, before returning to their homeland on October 19, 2013 with the league game on the eighth match day against Catania Calcio (2-1) in front of 4,798 visitors.
