List of train stations in Italy |
The Piacenza train station ( Italian : Stazione di Piacenza ) is the train station of the northern Italian city of Piacenza . It is operated by the Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), an organizational unit of the Ferrovie dello Stato . From 2001 to 2018, the Centostazioni company was responsible for marketing and leasing the retail space .
The station is on the Milan – Bologna line and is the starting point for the main line to Alessandria and the branch line to Cremona . The routes are operated by the RFI . The station is located north-east of the city center, between the urban area and the Po River .
history
The station was opened in 1859 at the same time as the Piacenza - Bologna section of the Milan - Bologna railway line . A few months later the line to Alessandria (and therefore Turin or Genoa ) was opened. In 1861 the bridge over the Po was finally completed, making the entire distance from Milan to Bologna passable. Piacenza developed into an important railway junction .
In 1933 the Piacenza – Cremona railway , which was to represent an important east-west connection through the Po Valley , was opened. However, it only achieved local significance.
In 1937 a new reception building was built according to plans by the architect Roberto Narducci in the style of the new objectivity ("Razionalismo") .
1932 to 1967 existed next to the FS train station, the local train station of the SIFT , which operated the electric local train Piacenza-Bettola as well as numerous overland trams .
business
In addition to local and regional trains, the station is also served by long-distance trains in the InterCity , Eurostar City and InterCityNotte categories . Every day around 260 trains serve the station, which is frequented by around five million travelers every year.

Accidents
On January 12, 1997, an ETR 460 Pendolino derailed on the way from Milan to Rome about 200 meters from the train station due to the broken connection between the traction motor and the wheels. The accident claimed eight lives and caused great damage to the rail infrastructure. The then Italian President , Francesco Cossiga, was also on board the train . Although Cossiga's reserved seat was in the foremost car of the train, in which all the fatalities were to be mourned, Cossiga was in the dining car at the time of the accident and thus escaped severe injuries or even death.
